The U.S. Department of the Interior took the brown pelican off the endangered species list, as you can read in the New York Times or on nature.com. Thanks to a ban on DDT in the 1970s, this bird is on the way back.
The brown pelican is a familiar neighbor around Isla Palenque. They’re interesting to watch — and boy, can those guys fish! And they’re big. They take off from the surface of the water and unfold huge wings. I love them. So here’s to them on their big day, and best wishes for making lots more baby pelicans in the future!
