  • My First Trip to Isla Palenque!

For the past two days I have been in Panama exploring the islands of the Pacific… I feel a little like Christopher Columbus — okay, just a little. I am now back on the mainland enjoying a delicious breakfast served up by the lovely owners of a charming seaside inn, and getting my day started by clicking away from the open air dining room overlooking the ocean with a sprinkling of islands in the foreground… this is the life!

This was my first visit to Isla Palenque. It’s still amazing to think that we have an entire island for our resort! Now that I’ve seen it, I realize the island is ideal for, and truly deserves to be, graced by an eco-luxury boutique hotel and resort. Currently, the island is totally virgin, so we hiked with machetes through the jungle….very cool. We have monkeys (I saw at least a dozen of them!), parrots, armadillos and anteaters.  The beach sand is like velvet between your toes, the aqua-blue water is the perfect temperature, and the sun beguiled us into a magical trance of peace and tranquility. Any stress I was carrying before I got to the island was washed away with the tides.

We could have easily have been in an episode of Lost or Gilligan’s Island, as we did not see or hear any another boat or human activity. Isla Palenque is only minutes from the mainland, and yet so undiscovered.  Where are the hordes of fishing boats, the thump, thump of the party cruises, or the scuba tours and the like? It is so naturally beautiful and peaceful that I had to ask the question….”Is there something wrong with the area? Why have we not seen anyone, not even a fisherman?”

The answer was simple. This is truly an undiscovered paradise. It turns out that the waters are teeming with fish, the diving is fantastic, and there are fabulous opportunities for boating and discovering the neighboring islands. Simply put, there are still exquisite island jewels waiting to be discovered!

Looking forward to living the life in Panama!
