Copa Airlines, a Continental-partnered airline, has announced that at the end of 2010 or beginning of 2011, they will begin offering David as one of their destinations. This is HUGE. It means that travelers can get to within five minutes of the Isla Palenque ferry with only one stop at Panama City’s Tocumen airport. Before this new route, travelers had to fly to the International Airport and then cross town to the Regional airport for a flight with a local carrier. If the demand is strong on these flights, perhaps we will soon see a flight that goes directly from David to one of Copa’s destinations such as Houston or Miami. This excellent news comes shortly after the government awarded almost $30 million to an Argentinean firm for the study, design, and construction of more airport expansion work.
Last fall, a few of our team members met with a representative from Copa Airlines and asked about the status of direct flights to David. Unfortunately, the representative we spoke to said that David as a direct-flight destination for Copa was not currently in the pipeline. If we learn of any plans to undertake this, we’ll be sure to publish on it.
Flights can now be booked to David from Tocumen, or tickets purchased direct to David. See this post for more information.
