Intelligent Travel, a blog on National Geographic Traveler, had an entry today on Tourism Campaigns Gone Wrong and it got me thinking about the Panama tourism entry I wrote about a few weeks ago.picture of islands taken from above

I believe that the Gulf of Chiriqui could be an extremely popular eco-tourism destination if Panama promotes the area with a marketing campaign complete with a witty slogan and images of the many islands, beach and adventure travel opportunities in the area. A successful campaign would not only help the already thriving Panamanian economy, but it would inform people who aren’t aware the area exists and possibly draw them in as guests at the many hotels. Fortunately, the Panama Tourism Authority agrees with us on this and is aware of the benefits of tourism to the Gulf of Chiriqui!

Who wouldn’t want to swim in these beautiful waters, snorkel with turtles and lie on beaches? (And that’s only a few of the possibilities).

Hi, Julio. That sounds incredibly frustrating!
I can only say that we have just begun our relationship with them, and we felt it went really well so far. It’s sad to hear about your less-then-happy experiences.

Yes! Let’s keep our fingers crossed for that airport expansion! That’s the key to making Chiriqui a prime tourism destination, so people who really appreciate its beauty and bounty will be able to get there more easily.

    3. Are you sure ATP agrees with you guys? In the past years they’ve also agreed with us business owners to many things for Boquete but unfortunately very, but very few things have been done… in fact, they keep portraying in some of their marketing materials an image of Boquete that is totally contrary to what we have been telling them… and many of us have literally spent hundreds of hours coming up with marketing material for them (upon request from them, as if all the 10% hotel tax wasn’t enough money for them… we also have to do their job!) and then they do nothing with it. On top of that, they ended up using a brilliant marketing concept that we came up with for another destination within Panama (and sadly they didn’t even execute it properly). In Boquete we have learned that unless things really change, we are a lot better off doing things ourselves… We do not know what to think: maybe Boquete isn’t within their agenda, or maybe they are just a bunch of amateurs playing with millions of dollars gained by us with a ridiculous ROI…
If they are really listening to you, make sure you guys are in control if you want it done properly… otherwise be ready for some frustration…
Hopefully they will deliver the international airport, and then I really won’t care that much if they market our province or they don’t: I’m pretty confident that us business owners with a marketing budget that is a lot smaller than theirs can do and achieve a LOT more…
Or maybe, someday, just someday they will let us use our own generated 10% hotel tax to use it as we wish….
