  • Panamanian Silly Bandz

During my 3-4 weeks in Panama near the end of 2010, I found some time to shop some of the local crafts. With only a couple of weeks to Christmas shop on my return to the states, I took it upon myself to find gifts while in Panama. Things like hammocks, finely crafted mola patterns, coffee, rum and jewelery were just a few items I knew I’d be bringing home for family members. But there was one gift in particular that really stood out from the rest.

In Panama you’ll find beautifully crafted palm wrapped bracelets, or what I like to call the Panamanian version of the ever so popular Silly Bandz here in the states. I explained this as I spread the bundle of colorful bracelets next to the Christmas tree to all my little cousins and they went crazy rummaging through the pile. I told them they had to explain where they were from to all their friends at school and weed out the cheap rubber bands covering their arms with something a bit more meaningful. They were calling me the first week they returned to school asking for more because all their friends were jealous. Now all my little cousins want to travel to Panama so they can buy more.

I completely agree Tammy! It’s more fashion forward to wear unique and original jewelery to accessorize your favorite outfit, especially if it also supports local merchants. You should come to Panama and snag a few for yourself!

Those are gorgeous!! I think you are on to something..the silly bands are so overrated and cheap..love to see young people wear something with a little style and pizazz! The bracelets are perfect! :) )
