  • Isla Palenque: First Impressions

It’s safe to say that I don’t believe in love at first sight. When you really think about it, some of the best things seem a little strange upon first glance. I mean, the first person to try a pineapple clearly did not believe that beauty is skin deep.

This is why I was so surprised to find myself enthralled by Isla Palenque from the moment I saw our majestic Panama tree rising above the forest canopy (it’s a fantastic reference point in finding your way to Isla Palenque, and my first indicator that I was finally there).

Our journey to the island could not have been more picturesque. As we cruised along the mangrove-lined estuary, dolphins leapt out of the water to greet us.  Pelicans, hawks, and herons soared by, guiding us into the Gulf of Chiriqui. It felt like the entire animal kingdom had showed up to welcome me to my first encounter with Isla Palenque.

I had an amazing first trip to Palenque. From swimming off of the coast of Playa Palenque to hiking around the sites of future homes taking in stunning views, I loved every minute!

While I can’t promise you will have the same magical, Disney-esque first experience with Isla Palenque, I can tell you you’ll see plenty of things that you’ve never encountered before and embark on your own unique adventure.  Come along for one of our Site Expeditions and see for yourself!

The funny thing about travel is we all want to go to places that are recommended to us, yet we desperately want to feel like we are discovering a place for the first time.

You first encounter does sound like the beginning of an old Disney classic. Swiss Family Robinson comes to mind.

Congrats Laura! You are living my dream. Exploring and writing about your experiences on Isla Palenque- what an amazing thing!

If only there was an internship that would allow me to discover this place and share it with the world…
