Vacation Inertia: It’s happened to all of us. Finally found time to take a much-deserved break from work, picked an interesting place to go and a great hotel. You plan all sorts of cool things to do – maybe you’re going to finally try getting on a surfboard, or you’re swapping your snorkel for some sportfishing – you’re excited about all the options and there’s no telling where adventure may lead.
Then you arrive at the hotel, and it’s so nice that you decide to “just relax” the first day. The second day rolls around and you’re still not fully decompressed, so again, you don’t venture out from the welcoming sands or stray too far from the beachfront bar.
Before you know it, the ocean has beguiled you with its siren song and you’ve frittered half your hard-earned vacation away with beach-lounging. Restful, yes, and immeasurably restorative – but you haven’t done any of the things you’d been so looking forward to. And now you’re fighting “vacation inertia” – the impulse to let the rest of your vacation slip away with your cares as you contemplate the waves and watch the ice melt in your glass.
The nicer the hotel, the greater the danger. I learned the reverse of this during some of my earliest travel experiences — back when I was younger and traversing Europe, I stayed in budget hostels with shared bathrooms and sometimes up to twelve people in a room: doing this pretty much ensures you’ll get out and experience the locale. But I was in my early twenties, short on funds and long on free time.
Now, older, busier, and able to enjoy Isla Palenque as part of my job (lucky me), I find myself occasionally falling victim to Playa Palenque’s power to hypnotize, and concerned about this happening for guests of our resort who only have a week or so to spend on the island… And our rooms and suites represent an additional lure for our guests; we’ve designed them to provide sophisticated comfort so that moments spent indoors feel just as luxurious as in the stunning natural surroundings…
All this temptation to simply bask meant that my team and I needed to develop an incentive for our guests to go on all the wild adventures they had envisioned for their Panama travels – and so it was that our Panama Vacation Packages came to be.
Why to Package
I firmly believe that you’ll be much happier if you get out and explore our island and the surrounding area every day of your vacation. So each of our packages includes at least one tour per person, per day. We don’t want to exhaust you, I promise. Most of the tours you’ll take will be right on or nearby our island, just an hour or three, and will literally start from the Great Room or one of our restaurants – and the mainland and ocean activities we offer are all rewarding day-trips or short excursions that bring you back to our idyllic island before sunset, or sooner. There’s still plenty of time in the day for some leisurely exploration on your own, or to take some deserved beach and bar time to relax.
You already know about avoiding “vacation inertia” – so here are a couple of the other most important reasons to book one of our Panama vacation packages:
- The vacation will be more relaxing. Counterintuitive as it may seem, taking part in some engaging activities makes for an ultimately relaxing vacation. Even a 90-minute hike, beginning steps from your room and quickly advancing through the diverse ecosystems of our 220-acre nature preserve, will have you appreciating that lounge chair and beach cocktail so much more than you would have otherwise. A little physical exertion can really enhance time spent relaxing, and the day’s discoveries will lend both your private thoughts and conversation with your travel companions a much more meaningful character.
- You’ll have real memories. In the long term, you’ll be much happier if you engage in new and meaningful activities while on vacation. You’ll end up with real memories, not just hazy recollections of beach sunsets and nice cocktails whose names you can’t quite place. You’ll be able to recall the vivid and unforgettable moment when you got fifty feet from a mother whale and her baby; the time you stared down a howler monkey right after watching an iguana languidly cross your path; and the unforgettable challenge of spending your last ounce of strength reeling in that 120-lb tuna (which, by the way, tasted great marinated and grilled just to your specification that evening).
- You’ll get the best experience. At Amble, we consider ourselves more than just developers and hoteliers. Our mission is to ensure our guests have transformational, life-altering experiences, and this informs every aspect of our hotel operations. If you take one of our packages, you will be arriving and leaving on specific dates, dates that we’ve chosen to allow us to orchestrate the best experience for you, based on your package choice. Instead of just arriving and leaving on random days and doing whatever activities happen to be available then, we will have organized tour and activity choices (not to mention menu choices and cuisine specials, among other things) that are mostly likely to take you on a journey to experience our island and the region of Panama around it.
- You’ll save money. In order to encourage the purchase of our packages, we mark them down significantly from the prices that you would pay if you just booked rooms and then bought food and took tours separately. And there’s a couple ways to look at this. One is just to look at the dollar savings; as a percentage of the overall rate, you’ll find that packages might save you 20-25% or more, usually at least $100 a day.
The way that I like to look at it, though, is a little different: we purposefully price our packages so that the included tours are free. (The nitpicking legal department wants me to clarify that this isn’t quite true; but do the math for yourself and you can see that it is very, very close, and in some cases the discounts are bigger than the value of the tours. So, okay, “virtually free”.) We’ve done this to encourage people to purchase the packages: once they do so, our tours and activities become pre-paid and people are much more likely to do them, and thereby make the most of their time on Isla Palenque. Both I and all of our staff think this island is amazing, and we want you to experience it fully, so we want you to let us guide you.
But I’ll also admit, there is some ulterior motive in making it more conducive for you to do our activities and let us guide you through this incredible island and the wonderful sights of Chiriquí. Because I am confident that if you do so, you’ll have an unforgettable experience which you will tell all of your friends and family about. And “word-of-mouth” is the best exposure we can get.
