When you begin covertly switching tabs at work to daydream on TripAdvisor, you know you need a vacation.
Planning your escape is one of life’s few morally-acceptable opportunities to turn idle fantasies into realities – so enjoy every minute of it. Swap an image of your chosen paradise in as a background on your phone or laptop and start lining up those island wellness treatments in your mind, to fill the hours between sunrise yoga on the beach and an evening of starlit swooning on the terrace, with an afternoon adventure or three just for the sake of variety.
You’ll be warmed by tropical sun and cooled by tropical cocktails. This much you know, and it’s enough to sustain the fantasy until your arrival.
But underneath all this (let’s be honest) pure hedonism, you perceive a need for something deeper, or at least the hope of discovering something deeper. It’s probably what led you to take a look at our Panama resort in the first place.
It’s uncertain where exactly you will find this “something deeper” – perhaps amid a jungle wilderness, untamed and buzzing with a promise of the unexpected. Or it might be among the indigenous Ngöbe–Buglé people of Soloy, while listening to them speak their ancient language and make beautiful music that bends your ear to its novel peculiarities. You might look on their simple style of living with envy, or with sober recognition of its poverty, or both. The landscapes and people of Panama will tap into those emotions that become latent when we start stringing together too many everydays without interruption.
These aspects of your desire to travel aren’t always apparent during the booking process. You’ve got a lot of decisions to make. What type of room? How many nights? Which tours, what about a package, and how are you handling transportation? Often, the original reason you sought to “get away from it all” is forgotten until you actually get there and get situated. And it is at this moment that your choice in hotel or resort really matters.
Travelers worldwide, in hostels and shanties, heck, even tents, are finding those deeply resonant qualities you seek in your journeys. Pretty much anybody can climb into a plane and land someplace new, but it takes an open mind and adventurous spirit to get to know a new place, and the rewards of doing this pay the same dividends to both backpackers and luxury resortgoers.
You work and play hard, and your time is precious. The reason you so need and deserve a vacation is because your daily life stretches you in myriad different directions. Family, career, interests and goals, pet projects and hibernating dreams – you wouldn’t give up a thing, but you would relish an opportunity to pause it all, if only for a week, to experience something revolutionary of your own.
Stay somewhere that perches you on the edge of that precipice where behind you is everything you’ve seen and done before, and ahead lies the unknown. The room you’ll inhabit during these rare days off the radar must be ensconced in something otherworldly – in an environment where discovery just happens, effortlessly, by stepping off your veranda. Commuting to the day’s adventure from your hotel just won’t do; that’s too ordinary. And simply sitting by the pool doing nothing might seem like the trick to relaxation, but too much and you’ll head home feeling lethargic.
At Isla Palenque, we invite you to immerse in a wild, beautiful, engaging natural place, and we’ve done everything possible to make it seamless.
Each day begins with wild tropical sounds –
“One of my favorite things about the island is the natural alarm clock known as howler monkey.”
– Kimshasa Baldwin, Principal of Deture Culsign
and continues with thrilling adventures –
“From such heights, I see the island as I never have before. I get a rush from being so far off the ground, so far out of my comfort zone, but I belong here too.”
– tree-climbing 2011 Island Intern Ben Brown
to be capped by a meal worthy of your well-earned appetite –
“The breeze picked up and started rustling the palms against the sunset sky, and we sat down to dinner right in the middle of it all… the refreshing ceviche waking me up out of a beauty-dazed trance with every bite.”
– island explorer Rachel Kowalczyk
So far, Isla Palenque is promising to fulfill every aspect of your escape fantasy. For those other things you hope to discover through travel, I’ll refer to a post Ben wrote quite some time ago in an effort to capture the essence of the Isla Palenque experience:
“When it’s time for you to return to mainland, you go with new vigor, new insights, and a sense of spiritual renewal.”
If you’ve booked with us, or are considering it, I’m asking you to do just one thing: get excited. It’s going to be extraordinary. You know you deserve it already… but have you ever gone on a vacation that left you wondering “What did I do right to deserve this?”
We can’t wait to see you on Isla Palenque.
