(Update 25 November 2014: For information about the Wildlife Tee Contest, which lasts until 10 December 2014, please go straight to the bottom of this post. Also, we are offering 30% off all orders placed before 21 December, just use the code IP30TEES during checkout.)
After over a year of off-and-on ruminations, I finally found inspiration for some very nice Isla Palenque t-shirts. We’ll be selling a couple of them on the island, but the best quality shirts and a wider variety of options will actually be available online: they get printed to order in the US, and can be shipped anywhere in the world, with delivery about 7-10 days after you place your order.
One of our more “enigmatic” shirts is just a tone-on-tone version of our Isla Palenque icon, printed on a dark shirt. But the more interesting shirts (at least to my mind) are those in our “Isla Palenque Wildlife Series”, which are halftone images made from photographs of various animals on Isla Palenque.
The “classic” versions of this series are simple black-on-white prints. Readers of a certain age might remember when Banana Republic was cool: if you recall, before the brand turned into a high-end version of The Gap, Banana Republic started off as purveyors of safari clothing and travel dreams. In the mid- to late-eighties, when I was in high school, there were few t-shirts cooler than the wildlife engraving tees sold by Banana Republic. If you remember them, you’ll see how they inspired our designs. (And by the way, if you own or have seen our “Isla Palenque” scrapbook, and also remember the old Banana Republic catalogs, I think you’ll notice a similar inspiration.)
We’ve expanded on the classic black-and-white tees, though, and offer a number of color versions as well. Many of these are being made in limited edition runs of just 20-30 shirts, and we plan to expand this series over time.
Update, 25 November 2014: To celebrate the launch of our online store and Wildlife Series tees, we are holding a contest for the next shirt in the series, especially made for those of you who visited Palenque already and have patiently waited for us to start producing some t-shirts.
If you’ve stayed with us and taken some photos of the wildlife, simply send your favorite photo to firstname.lastname@example.org. (Minimum recommended size is 1500 pixels on the shortest side.)
We will choose one photo from all of the submissions to convert into the style of our wildlife series, produce a limited edition of 20 shirts, and give the person who submitted the photo a unique version of that shirt for free.
In addition, for anyone who submits a photo, we will announce in advance when the limited edition shirts will go on sale, so they can have first shot at owning one, and give them a code for 30% off.
We will be choosing the photo on 10 December 2014, so you’ve only got a short time to submit your photo. We will have the shirts available for sale by the end of the year.
